At their November 18th meeting, the City Council approved a recommendation by the Open Space & Ecology Committee for a two-year pilot program with Zipcar, Inc. for car-sharing services.  “Movie”, a silver Toyota Prius, will be stationed at the Police parking lot on Valley Dr. and “Ireland”, a red Honda Insight Hybrid, will be stationed at the Park & Ride Lot on Bayshore Blvd. at Tunnel Ave.  This program removes an obstacle faced by commuters who want to take public transit by providing fuel-efficient vehicles they can use for short trips during the day. The program also provides residents the opportunity to use alternative modes of transit, leave their cars at home, and/or even reduce the number of vehicles owned by providing a low-cost vehicle to use on an as-needed basis.

Zipcar members sign up online, and receive access to the Zipcars using a keyless entry. Zipcars can be reserved by the hour or for up to several days, starting from $8.25/hour and $109/day for the pay-as-you-go plans or $7.43/hour or $98.10/day for the prepaid extra value plan. The reservation price includes gas, insurance, and up to 180 free miles per day. Members can reserve Zipcars online (, over the phone, or by using Zipcar’s mobile applications for both iPhone and Android, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

As an environmentally friendly transportation option, Zipcar will help to reduce Brisbane’s carbon footprint. National studies have shown that average vehicle miles traveled per driver is reduced by 40 percent when car owners switch to car sharing. Thank you! What a great

Thank you! What a great service. Now, Brisbane folks, let's use this (or lose it!)

Great idea. I'd like to

Great idea. I'd like to suggest a pickup truck added to available vehicles. I'm sure it would get a lot of use.

Thanks for your comment,

Thanks for your comment, Tony. Since the recommendation to bring in Zipcar came originally from the Open Space & Ecology Committee, with the intention of reducing our carbon footprint, the pilot program will start off with 2 hybrid vehicles. If the program goes well and there is enough users, then we can definitely look into requesting other vehicles like a pickup truck.
