Be Prepared!

Did you know that there is a 63% chance of a major earthquake occurring in the Bay Area within the next 30 years? After such an event, your water supply might be unavailable for up to 72 hours or more.  To help communities understand the gravity of this very possible situation, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission wanted to make this week a point to encourage all Bay Area residents to ready their home or office for an emergency.  And, as some of you may be aware, April 18th was the 106th anniversary of the devastating 1906 earthquake. 

The SFPUC operates the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System, which provides high-quality drinking water to 2.6 million residents and businesses across four Bay Area counties. The SFPUC is making the investment to seismically upgrade regional and local water facilities, tunnels, and pipelines. However, it is important for you to know that smaller pipelines leading to your home might be damaged as a result of an earthquake. As a result, water from your tap may be unavailable for up to 72 hours or more. Check out their tips on how to prepare for this.

Keep a 3-day water supply just in case

  • Each family member (including pets!) needs 1 gallon per day
  • Store tap water in food-grade plastic containers; replace every 6 months
  • Store bottled water in the original sealed containers; replace every 6 months

If your supply runs out, you can treat your tap water

  • Boil it for 3 minutes, or disinfect it by adding regular household bleach
  • Add 8 drops of bleach per gallon of water
  • Shake or stir then let it stand for 30 minutes

Farmer's Market in the Park

Yesterday's farmer's market made for a much more pleasant shopping experience with the beautiful weather and doubling of vendors from the week before.  Everyone looked pleased, the farmers were happy, and there was even a kid in the Festival Tree (with his grandpa nearby) so that he could watch the kettlecorn being made!  Executive Director of West Coast Farmers Market Association, Jerry Lami, was also enjoying himself as he watched people shopping and sampling oranges, strawberries, hummus, roasted almonds, and even a cross between a grapefruit and an orange!

One thing that will be different next Thursday is the addition of a "doggy daycare" near the picnic tables.  It's County and State regulation to not have dogs be too close to the vendors during farmers' markets, so Marie Holmes of Precious Pets Homecare will be on-site to look after your pooch while you shop.  There is no cost, but she will graciously accept tips if you'd like for her to groom and pamper your dog while you shop! The way we see it, t's a win-win-win for everyone, your dog included. 

Concerts in the Park

Concerts in the Park has become a late-summer staple in Brisbane, and we are excited to be planning the Series in conjunction with the Concerts Planning Subcommittee of the Parks and Recreation Commission.  There will be a mixture of genres being played every Friday night in Brisbane from 5:45pm – 8:30pm, ranging from Classic Oldies of the 50s and 60s to Country Western, and danceable hits from the past few decades you’ll be able to sing along to.  The Concerts will begin in late August (tentatively August 24th) and continue for five consecutive Fridays, capped off with a Sunday Afternoon Jazz Concert on September 30th.  One of the bands that have been booked so far is The Hot Rods.  You may have heard them play at a past Marina Festival.  From Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and Fats Domino to the Beach Boys, Beatles, Stones, and Motown, they are excited to be able to bring their energy and excitement of the greatest era of Rock & Roll to Brisbane on September 21st.

It should be said that NONE of the Concerts would be able to take place if it weren’t for the donations from the Business Community as well as Brisbane residents!  The Concerts have always been 100% funded by these means, and to show our appreciation, their names are included in the banner that hangs in-between the trees on Old County Road adjacent to the Park, as well as in all of the City’s print publications including its website, and will be publicly recognized by the Mayor at a City Council following the Concerts.  If you would like to donate towards the Concerts (any amount is acceptable), please contact Caroline Cheung at 508-2157 or  She is working with the Concerts Planning Subcommittee to ensure that the 2012 Summer Concert Series is a hit.  Stay tuned for more information about the Concerts and the line-up as August draws near.  In the meantime, keep your Friday evenings in late August – September from 5:45pm – 8:30pm open!

Disaster Preparedness Day

Last night's lightening and thunderstorm didn't result in any damage per se, but it's these types of natural occurrences that remind us how important it is to always be prepared in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency.  Please mark your calendars and save the date - Saturday, June 9th - for the 8th Annual San Mateo County Disaster Preparedness Day at the San Mateo County Event Center, 2495 South Delaware Street, San Mateo.

Once again, the event will be held on Opening Day of the San Mateo County Fair, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm, and free parking and free admission to the Fair will be offered to everyone who arrives before 11:00 am that day. This is a fabulous opportunity to collect and hear about the latest emergency preparedness updates, take a short but important free CPR course and bring your friends and family to the San Mateo County Fair!  Representatives from Brisbane's own Community Emergency Volunteers (CEVs) will also be on-site passing out preparedness brochures and speaking with the public about the role of the CEV/CERT members in each community.

Farmer's Market

The Community has been anticipating a farmer's market coming to Brisbane for many years.  Yesterday, their dream became a reality.

Many were lining up right after the farmers had finished putting out their produce at 3:00pm.

As would be expected, prices were being checked out and samples were given where appropriate.  Both were found to be favorable!

Items like rainbow swiss chard adorned the farmer's tables, making for quite a naturally beautiful spread.

And there was kettlecorn...popped right on-site and immediately bagged to the delight of waiting customers.

The farmer's market will be taking place every Thursday in the Community Park from 3:00pm - 7:00pm.  Next week, there will be twice as many vendors!

This last picture was shot by Brisbane resident Christina Florkowski and wonderfully commemorates the first-ever farmer's market in The City of Stars where the Community had an opportunity to gather and shop for fresh, local produce.

Seeing Orange?

If you've been out walking around town recently, you may have noticed new orange paint on some of the City's sidewalks.  You may have even seen a member of the Public Works Dept. applying the paint to the sidewalk itself.  This is routinely done so as to alert the Community of the areas of the sidewalk that over time may have become raised due to tree roots or are otherwise uneven.  The appearance of the paint may be bright, but such is done to enable individuals to be aware of that segment of sidewalk prior to it being properly repaired.  Doing so is estimated to cost over $120,000, which has been difficult to budget for in recent years.  In the interim, please use caution when out walking, and pay close attention to the areas with orange paint.

The Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance is launching a new campaign that aims to reduce single-occupant vehicles and rewards those who take public transit and/or bicycle to work.  Commuters who pledge to ride BART, Caltrain or SamTrans, or bicycle to work, at least eight (8) times from April 1 to June 1, 2012 will be entered to win great prizes that include a $250 transit incentive and a folding bicycle (valued over $500). To be eligible, applicants must register by May 14th and complete the post-campaign survey by June 15th.
