Brisbane Farmers' Market

Printer-friendly version

It seems like with each passing week, there is an even wider selection at the Brisbane Farmers' Market for residents and employees of Brisbane to choose from.  And yesterday's market couldn't have had better weather for a late afternoon market.

New vendor Neufeld Farms offers plenty of stone fruits, where you can mix and match apricots, plums, yellow and white peaches, along with nectarines for $2.50/lb.  They will be at the market weekly!

Nut 'n Bean's Chief Nut Katie and Prez Bean Yvonne have been at the Brisbane Market since Day 1, and continue to offer new varieties of their specialty nut butters, hummus, dips and spreads - you'll be wowed by their flavors when you put that sample spoon in your mouth!

Nearly every market has featured a musician, which adds to the atmosphere of the Brisbane Market.  If you're interested in playing for your Community, please contact Jerry at 650-290-.  He's currently looking for local Brisbane musicians!

Be sure to submit a slip at the Information Booth for a chance to win a market basket filled with goodies from many of the vendors.  A phone call is made each week between 6:45pm - 7:00pm to inform the lucky winner.  You DO NOT need to be present to win.

Beckmann's granola is extraordinary!  It's $7.50 per bag.  Try it in yogurt!  It's spectacular on its own as well.

Pretzel's from Crepe & Brioche are hard to stop from eating once a bite has been taken.  Perfectly salted on the outside, and nice and soft inside.  Toast it up with some mustard - your tastebuds will thank you.

Keep supporting the market to ensure that the vendors keep coming back!  Having a farmers' market is truly an added benefit to this Community, and we want to make sure it sticks around!

New Community Park Playground

Printer-friendly version

At their May 7, 2012 meeting, the City Council unanimously approved the recommended design of the Community Park’s new playground by Miracle Playsystems, the Mothers of Brisbane’s Fundraising Strategy, use of the available funding resources, and staff putting site preparation out to bid.  The demolition and off-haul of the current structure and sand (being re-purposed for sand bags) will start after the Fourth of July holiday weekend (July 7-8), thanks to the graciousness of the Brisbane Lions Club.  Their work over the span of a couple weekends will save the City $9,000 in total estimated project costs.

The approved design is shown above, which the Parks and Recreation Commission voted to recommend to the City Council at their March 14, 2012 meeting.  As you can see, there are some familiar features, such as the large twisty slide and sand, but the design also boasts more new features, such as a dedicated water element for sand and water play, climbing rocks and other strength-building apparatuses, shaded play towers, an enclosed bridge with safety netting, poured-in-place rubber surfacing, and a 3-bay swing set featuring two tot swings, two regular swings, and two therapeutic swings.  Near the swing set will be a low seat wall, which, on its vertical sides will feature gold stars with the names of all those who have chosen to donate towards the playground (donations over $1,000 will be honored in a special section on the seat wall).

The Mothers of Brisbane have a goal to raise $17,000 to close the funding gap, but if more than that is raised through the selling of gold stars, it will just mean more resources will then be available for other play initiatives in Brisbane.  So get your tax-deductible star orders forms in by the deadline of July 1, 2012 – and see your name in stars when the new playground is unveiled to the Community in mid-late September!

Brisbane Farmers' Market

Printer-friendly version

The weather was just perfect at yesterday's farmers' market - not too windy, but not too warm, either.  Perfect strolling, sampling, and in some cases, schelpping weather!

This was the scene at around 6:00pm.  Still bright with blue skies in Brisbane!

If you're on the City's Public Notification e-mail list, you probably saw a notice come through last Friday about a recall on the Italian Herb Extra Virgin Olive Oil sold at the farmer's market, only to have that recall lifted the following Monday.  Well, upon visiting with Rick, who is the vendor for Sapore Messo - distributors of the olive oil - it was clear he had learned a lot about the product since the previous week.  Italians love the tangy bite that the Italian Herb olive oil gives off, but for the average American, it's considered much too bitter.  And it definitely was.  But not all palates are created equal, and at the Brisbane farmers' market, there is definitely something for everyone.

For the palate that prefers a more mild-tasting olive oil, without losing its distinct olive taste, then Sapore Messo's California Arboquina Olive Oil is for you.  Paired with their Aged Balsamic Vinegar (which has been barrel-aged for 18 years!), the result is simply divine.  Imagine the two in your next caprese salad, or with a crusty dipping bread!  Rick's even got fancy bottle stoppers with automatic open-close pour spouts.  The above trio cost $30.

And, do allergies have your sinuses reeling?  Well, Bee Happy Honey may have just the solution - locally-sourced bee pollen!  (By local we're talking San Mateo!)  Take a teaspoon of bee pollen every day and you could have a much more enjoyable allergy season.  You can also try mixing it in yogurt or blending it in a fruit smoothie.

Next week, there will be a cheese vendor - Achadinha (pronounced "osh-a-deen-a") Cheese Company.  Be sure to check them out!

Remember, the farmers' market takes place every Thursday from 3:00pm - 7:00pm in the Community Park (11 Old County Rd., Brisbane).  Invite your friends and family to enjoy Brisbane's farmers' market.  And with that, happy shopping!
