Lyme Disease Safety

Printer-friendly version

As the weather warms and more people are hiking on San Bruno Mountain, we wanted to provide you with information on Lyme disease so you can learn how to prevent it and if needed, recognize the symptoms to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.  Lyme disease is transmitted by the western black-legged tick and the brochure Lyme Disease in California, published by the State's Department of Public Health Vector-Borne Disease Section, provides a good overview of the disease and should be referenced by all those who enjoy hiking the outdoors.  Some great tips worth highlighting from it are:

  1. Wear light-colored clothing so that ticks can be seen more easily.
  2. Wear a long-sleeved shirt and tuck shirt into pants; tuck pants into boots or socks.
  3. Stay on trails and avoid contact with bushes or grasses alongside trails where ticks are common.  The same should be applied to your dog if you take them hiking with you.
  4. Check your entire body for ticks for several days after you are out of tick habitat.  Parents should carefully examine their children.

For for information, please visit the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District's website.

With the study completed earlier this year, speed limits will change at the following locations:
