As the weather warms and more people are hiking on San Bruno Mountain, we wanted to provide you with information on Lyme disease so you can learn how to prevent it and if needed, recognize the symptoms to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment. Lyme disease is transmitted by the western black-legged tick and the brochure Lyme Disease in California, published by the State's Department of Public Health Vector-Borne Disease Section, provides a good overview of the disease and should be referenced by all those who enjoy hiking the outdoors. Some great tips worth highlighting from it are:
- Wear light-colored clothing so that ticks can be seen more easily.
- Wear a long-sleeved shirt and tuck shirt into pants; tuck pants into boots or socks.
- Stay on trails and avoid contact with bushes or grasses alongside trails where ticks are common. The same should be applied to your dog if you take them hiking with you.
- Check your entire body for ticks for several days after you are out of tick habitat. Parents should carefully examine their children.

As required by law to establish speed limits on certain streets, City staff recently oversaw completion of an Engineering and Traffic Study for speed limits. Included were all city streets that do not fall under the “Prima Facie” section of the California Vehicle Code for speed limits. Prima facie speeds are 25 miles per hour (mph) for streets in residential and business districts, as defined by the vehicle code.
With the study completed earlier this year, speed limits will change at the following locations:
Brisbane Lions Club
Annual Easter Egg Hunt
Kids 5 yrs. & under @ soccer field
Kids 6 years & over behind Lipman
City of Brisbane

Last Saturday, dozens of community members came to Station 81's Open House to welcome the firefighters back into the station after mold remediation and structural improvements were made to the fire station. Check out the video below, and learn some kitchen safety tips while you're at it.
Do you know anyone looking for a housemate or renter, or trying to rent out a room in their home? HIP Housing’s Home Sharing program can help make that a safe, comfortable process. HIP Housing has given free, long-term support to those who need it most in San Mateo County for 42 years. This is especially important now, as our county has become one of the most expensive areas to live in within the United States. The need for extra income is a common one, and renting out a room in your home is a great way to reduce costs and stimulate your community.
