PenTV's "The Game": Ep. 250

Printer-friendly version

A couple weeks ago, Mayor Clarke Conway and City Manager Clay Holstine were invited to be guests on PenTV's "The Game", a community show about local politics, sports, music, movies, and more.  They talked about the regional housing shortage, the complexity of the Baylands site with it being highly contaminated, and the desire for the Baylands to be cleaned up to a standard where a true residential neighborhood could one day exist.

Talking Sustainability in Brisbane

Printer-friendly version

If you haven't already heard, April is Earth Month.  How fitting then that Brisbane's Sustainability Management Analyst Adrienne Etherton was recently interviewed at PenTV studios in San Carlos with the below segment running on their channel (Comcast Ch. 26) throughout the entire month of April.  Check it out:

From the title, which alludes to Earth Day (April 21st), Adrienne speaks of how she's focused on addressing the City's Climate Action Plan and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the City.

Speaking of which, Adrienne cites the Feb. 14th grand opening of the City's first fast EV charger station which has been getting great usage in its first month.  She touched on other initiatives and strategies that the City will be tackling that keep greenhouse gas emissions low, which will be covered in greater depth in future posts focused on sustainability throughout this Earth Month!

In closing, as we are currently experiencing a small springtime shower, did you know that Brisbane has one of the lowest residential per-capita water use rates in the region at ~46-48 gallons per day?  The City has an ordinance prohibiting water waste, as well as a water-efficient landscaping ordinance that requires large landscape plans to show use of drought-tolerant plants and water-efficient irrigation.  We participate in regional water conservation programs offering rebates to qualified customers for high-efficiency toilets and rain barrels, offer landscape audits to our largest users, and coordinate water-efficient landscape classes and interactive school assemblies at BES.

Our next water-efficient landscape class will be held on Wednesday, April 18th at City Hall from 6-8pm.  It's in collaboration with BAWSCA (the Bay Area Water Supply & Conservation Agency) and is a hands-on workshop to learn all about water-wise edible gardening!  Register here:

And of course, we'll be celebrating Earth Day on Saturday, April 21st by hosting a Habitat Restoration Day at Mission Blue Dr. &  Monarch Dr. from 9:30am-12:30pm.  We'll be restoring Brisbane's native habitat by removing invasing plant species.  Volunteers of all ages & abilities are welcome!  Free t-shirt and lunch included.

Happy Earth Month!  Let's make sure we do what we can to protect the precious resources we've got.

Please Don't Use Rat Poison Outdoors

Printer-friendly version

A worthy reminder not to use rat/gopher poison/baits outside your home.  It directly affects beautiful creatures like this Red-tailed Hawk, who prey on rodents that may have eaten rat poison but are still alive.

At the end of January, a resident found this Red-tailed Hawk and called the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) to have it picked up.  When she called back to see about its condition, she was told it had to be euthanized due to organ failure.  What caused the organ failure is unclear, but the PHS asked that residents be reminded that poison baits have this effect on hawks and owls.  So, please, do not use rat/gopher poison outside for any reason.  Should you have an indoor pest problem such as rats or mice, check out this fact sheet Finding a Company that can Prevent Pest Problems, which can be found on the San Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program's website.  They also have a fact sheet dedicated to Keeping Rats and Mice Away from your Home.

Nominate Brisbane to Win a $20K Grant

Help get our city nominated for the Meet Me at the Park Earth Month campaign, which kicks off this April. If we get the most nominations, one of our parks will receive a $20,000 grant for improvements. In its fourth year, the Meet Me at the Park Earth Month campaign is a collaboration of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and The Walt Disney Company — including Disney|ABC Television Group and ESPN — to help fund local park improvement projects.

You could win, too. When you nominate our city, you’ll be entered into a sweepstakes to win a GoPro Prize Pack. The city with the most nominations at the end of April will receive the funding. Parks help make our lives better. They inspire healthy living, help protect the environment, provide access to sports and bring people together. Support our local parks this Earth Month by visiting them and nominating our city to improve a lucky park! Nominate our city today by visiting: .
