Nonprofit and Public Agencies
- The San Mateo County Department of Housing manages a variety of affordable housing programs and provides information and assistance to individuals and famlies seeking affordable housing throughout San Mateo County.
- HIP Housing is a nonprofit organization serving San Mateo County. HIP’s programs include innovative housing programs and mentoring programs to help families and individuals find and keep affordable housing. Looking for an affordable rental? HIP’s Home Sharing program is actively seeking both potential renters and providers! Check out HIP’s website for more information on all their housing programs.
- The Housing Endowment and Regional Trust (HEART) is a community loan fund that provides down payment assistance loans to first-time homebuyers in San Mateo County to help reduce the cost of housing. Fall workshops for prospective homeowners begin in September! Check out HEART's website for workshop dates.
- Project Sentinel is a HUD-approved Housing Counseling Agency that provides counseling on reverse mortgages, dispute resolution, housing discrimination, mortgage foreclosure and delinquency, home buyer education, and more.
San Mateo County landlords, tenants, and neighbors can call Project Sentinel's free housing helpline at (650) 399-2149 to receive information about their rights and responsibilities, referrals, and guidance on how to jointly and amicably resolve their landlord-tenant disputes on such issues as rent increase, termination of tenancy, security deposit, repairs, finding below market rate housing, including conciliation and mediation (through PCRC) of their disputes. - Rebuilding Together Peninsula provides free health and safety repairs to homes owned by seniors, low-income families, and families with disabled family members at no cost to service recipients. RTP's repair services may include basic plumbing and electrical, door and window repair, floor repair, debris removal, and more. Call or visit their website to apply for services.
- The Center on Homelessness coordinates programs for homeless people in San Mateo County, such as emergency shelter, housing assistance, food, childcare, transportation, employment referrals, job training, and more.
- While the County’s Rehab Loan Program is not currently accepting applications, their program webpage maintains a list of contact information for nonprofit minor home repair organizations that is a good resource for homeowners.
- CalHFA offers first and junior loan options for low to moderate income families throughout California, including first time homebuyers and current homeowners. Loans are available based on established eligibility criteria such as household income limits, sales price limits, and others.
